There are three main ‘types’ of marijuana plant; (1) Ruderalis, such as the Lowryder varieties, (2) Indica, such as Kush and Skunk, and (3) Sativa, such as Haze and Diesel weeds. As well as this, there are an infinite number of hybrids, cross breeds and selectively bred types of cannabis, with many new varieties becoming available every year.

With so much choice, it is important to think about what you want from the final product. Today there are many more growers choosing to specialize in medical marijuana cultivation as opposed to simply recreational growing, and this often means they are looking to optimize their product for CBD. Here we take a look at what CBD actually is, and investigate the 10 best seeds for CBD content. Gorilla Seeds do a High CBD section on their site, worth looking at.

CBD Molecule

What is CBD?

There are over 60 different compounds in marijuana, but by far the highest concentrations are of THC and CBD or Cannabidiol. THC is the part of marijuana that gets users ‘stoned’, and produces the heady, floaty feeling that most people associate with marijuana use. For this reason, many growers have optimizefor THC content, effectively breeding out CBD to create more potent weeds.

CBD, on the other hand, has been shown to potentially reduce some of the psychoactive effects of THC. More important than this, it has been shown to have numerous health benefits to users, and is the main reasons marijuana in the past has been seen to be a healing herb. CBD is still a controlled substance in the US and the UK, despite extensive evidence that it could be a useful medicine for people suffering with a wide range of illnesses.

Medicinal marijuana

Claims have been made that marijuana products that are high in CBD content can be beneficial for the health of the user, and can be used to treat illnesses that traditional synthetic medicines are failing to effectively handle. Illnesses such as MS and epilepsy are reported to be highly responsive to CBD; you can see for yourself some of the praise for CBD first hand in this video. Some of the illnesses it is reported to help with include:

  • MS

  • Seizures and epilepsy

  • Cancer

  • Depression and anxiety

  • Alcohol induced brain damage

  • Psychosis

  • Stress

  • Chronic pain

  • Diabetes

Medical Marijuana

These are just a few of the diseases and illnesses which have been shown to respond to CBD treatment. In tests CBD is found to be an analgesic (pain reliever), an anti-inflammatory, an anti-emetic (reducing vomiting and nausea), an anti-bacterial, an anti-ischemic (reduces blockages in the arteries), an antipsychotic… and if that’s not enough for you it also promotes healthy bone growth and protects against degeneration of the nervous system.

Top 10 High CBD Strains 2019

As the demand for cannabidiol (CBD) skyrockets, cultivators are experimenting with various cannabis genes to produce unique high-CBD strains. The number of fascinating flavors in the modern CBD industry is simply mind-boggling, especially for those new to the field.

If you’re confused by all the varieties of CBD that are now available, then this is the list for you. Below, we’ll review 10 of the best high-CBD strains available as of 2019.

1. Harlequin

  • Type : Sativa-dominant hybrid
  • Height : Tall
  • Flowering time : 7 – 9 weeks
  • Yield : Medium
  • Feminized : Yes
  • Autoflowering : No
  • Growth difficulty : Easy
  • CBD level : 6% – 15%

Although it’s named in honor of 16th century Italian clowns, the Harlequin strain won’t give you the giggles. Indeed, this sativa-dominant hybrid strain is actually best known for its analgesic, anti-nausea, and overall relaxing effects.

With a CBD to THC ratio of about 5:2, Harlequin is best suited for people suffering from chronic pain conditions like fibromyalgia, joint pain, or arthritis. Patients with digestive disorders like ulcerative colitis have also praised this strain for its anti-inflammatory benefits.

People who’ve used Harlequin say this cannabis strain has a relaxing, but not sedating, effect on the mind. Users also report Harlequin has a woodsy fragrance and a mild, tropical flavor.

In case you were wondering, the reason for this strain’s unique name has to do with its “patchwork” of genetics (like the colorful patches on a clown’s garb). In Harlequin, you’ll find traces of strains such as Colombian Gold, Swiss, and Thai.

Beginning cultivators shouldn’t feel intimidated growing Harlequin either indoors or outdoors. As long as this strain is in an environment between 70 – 80°F with plenty of sunlight, it shouldn’t have any issue growing into a tall, healthy plant.

2. ACDC

  • Type : Sativa-dominant hybrid
  • Height : Medium
  • Flowering time : 7 – 9 weeks
  • Yield : Medium
  • Feminized : Yes
  • Autoflowering : No
  • Growth difficulty : Moderate
  • CBD level : 16% – 20%

With a CBD to THC ratio of 20:1, the ACDC strain is a very potent medicinal-grade cannabis strain. Interestingly, cultivators created ACDC by extracting a phenotype from another popular CBD-rich strain, Cannatonic…but more on that later.

The aroma of ACDC is very woodsy with just a slight hint of citrus. When you inhale this strain, you’re most likely to detect piney flavors and a subtle kick of spice.

Patients with medical issues such as seizures, neuropathy, and chronic pain syndromes have benefited from incorporating ACDC into their lives. This strain is also very helpful for people who struggle with anxiety disorders, attention-deficit issues, and PTSD.

Please note: ACDC is not for beginning cultivators. The main difficulty you’ll run into when cultivating this plant is its lack of resistance to pests and mold. Anyone interested in cultivating ACDC needs to be hyper-vigilant.

3. Charlotte’s Web

  • Type: Sativa-dominant hybrid
  • Height: Medium
  • Flowering time: 9 – 10 weeks
  • Yield: Medium
  • Feminized: Yes
  • Autoflowering: No
  • Growth difficulty: Medium
  • CBD level: 15% – 20%

In recent years, Charlotte’s Web has become the most hyped strains of high-CBD cannabis in the biz. This sativa-heavy strain is named after Duvet’s syndrome patient (Charlotte Figi) who experienced a tremendous reduction in seizures after taking CBD. Colorado’s Stanley Brothers are responsible for developing this strain and have received a great deal of media attention for their efforts.

The exact genetics of Charlotte’s Web remain a trade secret, but we do know this strain is a slight sativa-dominant hybrid. We also know the CBD content of Charlotte’s Web usually hovers around 17 percent and that THC content is always below 1 percent.

Obviously, the primary purpose of Charlotte’s Web is to reduce the frequency and severity of epileptic seizures. People with other serious conditions like multiple sclerosis or osteoarthritis, however, could benefit from using this high-CBD strain.

As for the aroma, Charlotte’s Web is reputed to be very earthy and woodsy. Patients who use Charlotte’s Web usually report this strain tastes like sage with a tiny bit of lemon.

The grow information on Charlotte’s Web is still a guarded secret, so growers need access to a clone to make this strain at home. The information currently released to the public, however, suggests that it takes about 10 weeks to grow a full plant indoors or outdoors for a moderate yield.

4. Cherry Wine

  • Type: Sativa-dominant hybrid
  • Height: Medium
  • Flowering time: 9 weeks
  • Yield: High
  • Feminized: Yes
  • Autoflowering: No
  • Growth difficulty: Medium
  • CBD level: 19% – 21%

With a name like Cherry Wine, you’d better expect this strain to smell like…well, cherries! In addition to the pronounced sweet fruity notes, Cherry Wine users say they can detect undertones of cheese, pine, and even a bit of pepper.

Genetically speaking, Cherry Wine is a mix of the sativa-heavy Charlotte’s Cherries and a phenotype from The Wife hybrid. Depending on how well it’s cultivated, Cherry Wine could have CBD content of over 20%. When fully grown, Cherry Wine’s small to medium leaves are highly resinous and usually have orangey pistils.

Many patients use Cherry Wine for the treatment of mental conditions like anxiety, depression, and even autism. Users say this particular strain helps them feel more focused and euphoric without the typical side effects of a THC high.

It takes roughly 9 weeks to grow a full Cherry Wine cannabis strain at home. As with most sativa-heavy cannabis strains, this plant can grow quite tall, so it’s important to plan ahead and leave at least 4 feet of space.

5. Remedy

  • Type: Indica-dominant hybrid
  • Height: Medium
  • Flowering time: 7 – 9 weeks
  • Yield: Medium
  • Feminized: Yes
  • Autoflowering: No
  • Growth difficulty: Hard
  • CBD level: 12% – 16%

Another popular cannabis strain with a high amount of CBD is known as Remedy. Made out of a fusion of the indica strain Afghan Skunk and the hybrid Cannatonic, Remedy is a hybrid strain composed of roughly 75 percent indica to 25 percent sativa.

Unlike some of the other strains in this article, Remedy is reputed for its intense taste and aroma. Most people who’ve reviewed this strain describe its flavor as a “lemon forest.” The damp earthy tones in Remedy are supposed to be well balanced by the brightness of the citrus. Some people even describe Remedy’s taste to that of a soothing herbal tea like lemon balm or lemongrass.

So, what exactly is Remedy a remedy for? Well, the developers of this strain were most interested in highlighting CBD’s anti-inflammatory benefits, so people with issues like fibromyalgia and arthritis respond very well to this strain. Thanks to its pronounced lemony taste, Remedy has also proven effective as an energizer. This mood-enhancing benefit might help patients suffering from depression or fatigue syndromes.

Keep in mind that Remedy isn’t a beginner’s strain to grow and it’s almost impossible to grow outdoors. This plant needs a constant subtropical climate to produce high yields and is very sensitive to cool temps.

6. Harle-Tsu

  • Type: Indica-dominant hybrid
  • Height: Medium
  • Flowering time: 8 weeks
  • Yield: High
  • Feminized: Yes
  • Autoflowering: No
  • Growth difficulty: Hard
  • CBD level: 18% – 24%

Made out of a mix of the strains Harlequin and Sour Tsunami, Harle-Tsu is classified as an indica-heavy hybrid with a CBD to THC content of 20:1. Since the THC content is so low, don’t expect to find hairy trichomes on a mature Harle-Tsu product. Instead, these leaves tend to have a very light green color and a smooth surface.

A few of the most pronounced aromas in the Harle-Tsu strain include skunk, pepper, and pine. Although there are earthy flavors in this strain, people are usually most shocked by the strength of Harle-Tsu’s sweet floral overtones that are complimented with spice and citrus.

Harle-Tsu has many potential medicinal uses ranging from muscle spasms to insomnia. Some users have also used Harle-Tsu’s antibacterial and antiviral properties to help them overcome gut issues. Harle-Tsu also appears to be beneficial for patients who are dealing with chronic pain disorders.

Harle-Tsu is rather difficult to grow indoors and almost impossible to cultivate outdoors. Anyone who wants to grow this strain at home should keep their temp at a constant of 80°F or slightly lower. You also need to reduce humidity levels during the flowering phase because Harle-Tsu is particularly susceptible to mold and fungus.

7. Sour Tsunami

  • Type: Sativa-dominant hybrid
  • Height: Medium
  • Flowering time: 9 weeks
  • Yield: High
  • Feminized: Yes
  • Autoflowering: No
  • Growth difficulty: Moderate
  • CBD level: 10% – 11%

Although its name is Sour Tsunami, the best way to describe this sativa-heavy hybrid’s flavor is to compare it to diesel. Indeed, Sour Tsunami is the result of a combination of the strains NYC Diesel and Sour Diesel with a hint of a lesser-known California strain called Ferrari. In addition to diesel, some people have described the taste of Sour Tsunami to intense dark chocolate.

Besides its bitter taste, Sour Tsunami is notable for its eye-catching purple buds. Usually it takes about 9 weeks of indoor growth to produce a mature Sour Tsunami plant.

Sour Tsunami was one of the first cannabis strains created for high CBD content, so it’s not as concentrated as newer strains like Charlotte’s Web. Usually high-quality Sour Tsunami has a CBD content of around 10 percent and a THC content below 10 percent. This makes Sour Tsunami superb for medicinal users who are interested in exploiting the “entourage effect.” The sativa to indica ratio on Sour Tsunami, however, is usually well balanced at 60 percent sativa to 40 percent indica.

Thanks to its slightly higher THC content, Sour Tsunami makes a great option for people who struggle with insomnia or other sleep-related disorders. While this strain won’t completely sedate you, it has almost none of the energizing qualities present in more citrusy flavors.

8. Elektra

  • Type: Hybrid
  • Height: Medium
  • Flowering time: 9 weeks
  • Yield: Medium
  • Feminized: Yes
  • Autoflowering: No
  • Growth difficulty: Moderate
  • CBD level: 6% – 17%

The hybrid Elektra is distinctive for its diverse collection of aromatic terpenes and eye-catching orange streaks. Made out of a mixture of ACDC and Early Resin Berry, Elektra has a unique flavor profile that includes notes of citrus, mango, and pine.

At the high end, expect to find Elektra strains with CBD content just below 20 percent. THC content is almost non-existent in most Elektra strains.

The major effect Elektra has on a user is usually clear-headed relaxation. This makes the Elektra strain excellent for people who suffer from chronic stress, headaches, or muscular tension. Other conditions people have used Elektra for include PMS, joint pain, and depression.

9. Cannatonic

  • Type: Hybrid
  • Height: Medium
  • Flowering time: 10 – 12 weeks
  • Yield: High
  • Feminized: Yes
  • Autoflowering: No
  • Growth difficulty: Moderate
  • CBD level: 15% – 18%

Cannatonic is another high-CBD strain that was developed to help people with various medical issues. This evenly balanced sativa-indica hybrid was made using the cannabis strains MK Ultra and G12 Haze. The CBD of this strain could go as high as 18 percent while the THC content never goes above 15 percent.

This strain of cannabis has a very pronounced citrusy aroma and taste. Underneath the heavy sour notes, however, users will experience woodsy flavors, especially pine. This high citrusy flavor profile gives Cannatonic an uplifting effect on the user.

People with mood disorders like depression or chronic fatigue syndrome are perfect candidates for this citrusy strain. Those with disorders like PTSD or ADD, however, might want to experiment with Cannatonic in low doses to avoid getting over-energized.

Unfortunately, Cannatonic is one of the trickiest strains to grow at home. If you are going to grow this plant, then you need to pay close attention to the humidity and climate of your garden. Cannatonic is almost defenseless against mold, so constant vigilance is key.

10. Trident

  • Type: 50/50 Hybrid
  • Height: High
  • Flowering time: 12 – 13 weeks
  • Yield: High
  • Feminized: Yes
  • Autoflowering: No
  • Growth difficulty: Easy
  • CBD level: 12% – 15%

We don’t know much about the Trident strain’s origins or genetics, but we do know this CBD-rich 50/50 hybrid has plenty to offer people hunting for a versatile medicinal cannabis plant.

Once you see and smell Trident for yourself you’ll understand why many smokers associate this strain with Christmastime. Not only does Trident have a rich pine smell, it also has a pronounced bright green color.

The effects of Trident are described as a “mellow euphoria,” which basically means it uplifts your mood and relaxes your mind at the same time. The THC content in this plant is a maximum of 6 percent with an average CBD content of about 12 percent. This makes Trident a good choice for people suffering from nervous disorders like panic attacks, PTSD, or anxiety. Trident has also been shown to be effective for anyone dealing with muscle issues and chemo-related nausea.

The most difficult thing about growing Trident at home is finding a high-quality clone or seeds to start with. Once you have Trident genes, however, this plant is quite resistant and suitable for beginner growers. Just keep in mind that Trident could reach a height of 6 feet before reaching the harvesting phase.

Top 10 High CBD Strains 2018

The medical marijuana community is going from strength to strength and seed banks are responding with lots of new high CBD strains bred specifically for medicinal applications.

What is CBD?

There are at least 85 active cannabinoids in the cannabis plant and Cannabidiol (CBD) is one of them. CBD is a major phytocannabinoid which can account for up to 40% of the plant’s extract. When compared to the traditional high tetrahydrocannabinol (THC) seed strains, medical users look towards CBD. The US Food and Drug agency (FDA) has authorized an orally administered liquid containing CBD for use by certain medial patients, the medicine is called Epidiolex.

There are a lot of medical marijuana growers who swear by having a smoke or vaporizer of their own medical marijuana and like to grow their own meds high in cannabidiol.

hello, can I please have the contact details of the Stanley Brothers?
I have my doughter that needs CBD badly!!!
    thanks

  2. Elisabeth says:

    Hello!
    Very nice list!

I would be nice if you could include stability of the genetics as well. Like Cannatonic is an unstable genetics, 25% will have high cbd low thc, 50% will be 1:1 and the last 25% will be low cbd high thc. So it needs to be tested to make sure you have a high CBD pheno. ( i work for Resin Seeds btw, hehe )This is common in all unstable strains. But the genetics from CBD Crew ( who also made several of the strains for the other companies here ) are table genetics, cbd/thc in every single seed 🙂
Charlottes Web is not a strain either btw, it’s never been produced seeds. If anybody finds seeds online, like canadinahempco.com. it’s a pure scam. Do not waste your money!

Great work to the author spreading needed information!
